About the Young Marines

The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501c(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age eight through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline, so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Since the Young Marines' humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to 281 units with 9,600 youth and 2,400 adult volunteers in 40 states, the District of Columbia and Okinawa with affiliates in other countries.

Unit: Lewis & Clark

 

 

The Unit Commander is responsible for everything the unit does or fails to do.  They are elected every two years and work closely with the unit Executive Officer to select their unit staff carefully to provide their Young Marines the best program possible— limited only by imagination and resources.  The Unit Commander shall plan, organize, administer, and support the unit to meet the mission, purpose and objectives of the Young Marine Program.

Battalion: 1st Washington

 

 

The 1st Washington Battalion serves 4 units within the state of Washington.  The Battalion Commander is elected by the unit commanders within the battalion and serves a 2 year term.  Battalion Commanders are responsible to their Regimental Commander and their Division Commander for all matters pertaining to the mission, purpose, and objectives of the Young Marines Program for their respective battalion.

Regiment: Northwest

 

The Northwest Regiment serves 4 states within the Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana).  The Regimental Commander is elected by the unit commanders within the regiment and serves a 2 year term.  Regimental Commanders are responsible to the Division Commander for all matters pertaining to the mission, purpose, and objectives of the Young Marines Program for the regiment.

Division: 6th

 

 

The National Young Marines Program is divided into six geographical divisions.  The sixth division includes nearly 1,500 Young Marines from Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana and Arizona.  The National Executive Director appoints the Division Commanders and they are the adult volunteer Young Marine official for their respective division. The Division Commander provides the leadership, supervision, guidance, and assistance to subordinate Unit Commanders as requested through the chain of command.

Young Marines National Headquarters

 

The National Executive Director serves as Chief Executive Officer for the Young Marines Program and directs the daily action of the national headquarters staff and the six division commanders. The National Executive Director is responsible to the Young Marines Board of Directors for achieving the mission, purpose and objectives of the Young Marines Program.

Mr. Smith is a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College and has earned a Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies, Masters in Business Administration, and Bachelors in Business Administration in Finance from the McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Young Marines since 2008.  Mr. Smith is also a member of the Society for International Development, the Military Officers Association of America, and the Marine Corps Association. He is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion.
