The US Navy commissioned its newest amphibious transport dock, the USS Portland (LPD 27), during a 10:00 a.m. ceremony Saturday, April 21, at the Port of Portland, Marine Terminal 2 in Portland, Oregon. The Lewis & Clark Young Marines are proud to have been invited to support the commissioning activities and participate in this event.
14 senior Young Marines and 3 staff arrived at 0630 for this 1000 event. We were asked to man the main gate and hand out commissioning event programs and the USS Portland-LPD 27 Commissioning brochures to arriving guests. We worked at the main gate for about 6 hours and handed out thousands of brochures until we ran out.
After the Commissioning ceremony had concluded, our Young Marines were able to tour the ship. This is a day they will remember for some time to come.
For our Young Marines who were unable to attend the ceremony, they watched the event live at our drill site.
The Lewis & Clark Young Marines would like to wish “Fair Winds and Following Seas” to the entire crew of the USS Portland-LPD 27. You will always hold a special place in our hearts.
